Invasion by JamesLedgerConcepts Invasion by JamesLedgerConcepts
A loose painting of some invading walker-type aliens at a harbor, set some-when in the future. Initially it was set in a more technological environment but I decided to tone it down. All done in Photoshop. This image is a personal project, so doesn't belong to anyone else, i.e. a client. The full license for this image is 40 ($60).

A similar quick concept would take a day to do (including revisions). The cost would be 100 ($160).

Thanks - more like an invasion. The walkers look like part of the city buildings though..!

Yes, it reminds me of the original War of the Worlds album cover, if you have ever seen it.

The depth in this piece <3. I like the subtle touch of the marines hiding/running gives a bit more life to it all :)

I like the design of those two similar structures in the background. Very alien-looking indeed with those organic shapes :alien: The haze in the atmosphere adds an eerie mood to it too :)

Thanks loads for that prit - those structures were supposed to be alien walkers but everyone see's them as buildings - i realize they need to look more animated now and will bear in mind for the future!

I love how the area's already been evacuated - something different from most other invasion pictures on dA.

This is an excellent piece. The size ratio and depth perception create a cinematic appeal. You have a very nice gallery. How long did it take you to finish?

Thanks a lot Sparks! This gallery was started whilst I began learning all about the fundamentals of art from online tutorials and videos. I have been doing the work over about 1.5 years. Lots of other work never made it to my portfolio as it was not up to scratch due to the learning phase.

I did that in an evening - maybe 3 or 4 hours. Usually they take a lot longer, like days.

I only use photoshop - never actually tried painter, only seen others using it. The brushes do look very good but I hear that the program does crash more often than photoshop.

Wow. That's interesting. I've never heard about the crashing problem. The program must use a lot of memory. I have Painter 11, but I rarely use it. What brushes do you mostly use in Photoshop? I either use the hard round or a soft round set to airbrush.

I use the same - sometimes I flatten the hard round brush and angle it to paint jagged rocks etc. The soft brush is excellent for curved surfaces. I am not keen on too much texture as it is a job to use and can get really fuzzy.

I really like the design and composition but I think the painting still misses a sense of actual danger. Only when reading the description I noticed that they were alien walkers instead of buildings. I think, what's missing is damage to the architecture and gun fire.

Definitely - someone else said that about the walkers! There just doesn't seem to be enough drama or immediacy. Yes, damage and so on to increase the action.
I will take that on board for future works.
Cheers again merb!
